Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: basic answer but stardew😭😭 it can get tedious after a while but it will always have my heart

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: The most-named title in the corpus and the one most often described as a recent discovery rather than a returning favourite. Commenters emphasise that it is free and combines farming, adventure and social play, and several are careful to distinguish enjoying it from being cured by it.

What readers reported: I love Hollow Knight biblically. Then ww have Stardew Valley, Genshin Impact, Palia, The Sims, Cult of Lamb, Binding of Isaac, the Zelda games bring back childhood memories

Limit: Frequently named with little detail; one commenter explicitly says it did not lift their depression, only that it was pleasant.

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Elden Ring, it’s popular for a reason, the lore makes you feel really immersed and the gameplay feels challenging

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: The archetypal comfort replay: commenters describe returning to it repeatedly over years rather than finishing it, and several credit that repetition itself with keeping them going. Modded and older entries in the series come up as the way to refresh a game they have already exhausted.

What readers reported: Sims 4, Baldurs Gate 3, and I love to come back to Skyrim and also Dragon Age Inquisition ❤️😅

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Raft, Cyberpunk, Detroit, News tower (early access), stardew valley

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Outer Wilds. Don't look up anything on it. It will change your view on everything.

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Recommended for branching consequence rather than atmosphere — commenters say decisions carry across playthroughs and games, which is what makes a replay feel different rather than repeated. Origins and Inquisition are named as the two entry points, and one commenter credits the series with breaking a gaming slump twice.

What readers reported: Sims 4, Baldurs Gate 3, and I love to come back to Skyrim and also Dragon Age Inquisition ❤️😅

Limit: Commenters disagree on which entry to start with.

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: kingdom come deliverance 2 and going back to console gaming instead of PC

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Named as a mood-switch rather than an absorbing story — commenters reach for it specifically after a frustrating session of something competitive. It is one of the few picks whose supporters volunteer its weakness in the same breath, calling it repetitive over time, and several specify an older entry over the current one.

What readers reported: I love Hollow Knight biblically. Then ww have Stardew Valley, Genshin Impact, Palia, The Sims, Cult of Lamb, Binding of Isaac, the Zelda games bring back childhood memories

Limit: Described as repetitive by its own supporters, with disagreement over which entry is best.

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Elden Ring for me. Dark Souls 3 as an honorable mention.

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Carries the corpus's most intense personal statements — commenters describing tattoos and crediting the game with saving their life — and almost no description of what it is. The devotion is the finding here; the game itself goes largely unexplained.

What readers reported: I love Hollow Knight biblically. Then ww have Stardew Valley, Genshin Impact, Palia, The Sims, Cult of Lamb, Binding of Isaac, the Zelda games bring back childhood memories

Limit: Endorsements are emphatic but rarely say anything about the game's content or difficulty.

Why readers recommended it: FFXIV! I get to be cute and go to venues with friends and design house and soooo many glams

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Notable mainly for the edition confusion its own commenters flag: the original and its remaster are treated as effectively the same recommendation. What draws people is taming and base-building rather than survival difficulty.

What readers reported: I’m ngl, ark pve servers. I love having a bunch of dinosaur pets and building a cool base

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: The one title with a stated method attached: commenters advise deliberately not looking anything up and discovering the systems by playing, arguing that the game is diminished by guides. Its emotional pull is described as exploratory — sailing outward with friends — rather than as goal completion.

What readers reported: Valheim was my go too for awhile! The best way to play(in my opinion) is not look up any instructions and just explore and figure it all out as you go, it makes the game so much better in my opinion. I wish I could play it for the first time again!

Why readers recommended it: Girl if you don’t play my time at Sandrock right now.. you are MISSING out

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Valued for its music as much as its play — one commenter describes the soundtrack alone restoring them without touching the game. It appears most often as childhood re-entry, named alongside other formative series rather than as a current obsession.

What readers reported: I love Hollow Knight biblically. Then ww have Stardew Valley, Genshin Impact, Palia, The Sims, Cult of Lamb, Binding of Isaac, the Zelda games bring back childhood memories

Limit: Rarely tied to a specific entry in the series.

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Recommended almost entirely as a multiplayer proposition — commenters state it is good alone and better with friends, and pair it with other survival-craft titles as a set rather than a single pick.

What readers reported: Terraria definitely one of the greatest games ever even better with friends too.

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Positioned explicitly as the answer for people who have exhausted the genre's leading title, with commenters citing 250-plus hours and content still remaining as evidence it sustains. Several describe it in the strongest terms used anywhere here — a game that reached them at a low point.

What readers reported: Coral Island. I was in an awful dark hole and something about that game saved me tbh

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Recommended defensively: commenters preface it by anticipating judgement, distinguishing the game from its reputation or its fanbase. Those who defend it cite volume — lore, content, and days largely spent inside it — which is also what the more cautious commenters describe as the risk.

What readers reported: I love Hollow Knight biblically. Then ww have Stardew Valley, Genshin Impact, Palia, The Sims, Cult of Lamb, Binding of Isaac, the Zelda games bring back childhood memories

Limit: Supporters describe playing it for most of their waking hours, which several frame ambivalently rather than as a benefit.

Why readers recommended it: A completion-driven pick rather than a comforting one: commenters describe being unable to stop until a file was finished at 100 percent, and recommend chasing achievements as the reason to return.

Why readers recommended it: The pick most explicitly tied to a kind of mind rather than a mood — commenters say enjoyment depends on personality and name it alongside its closest counterpart as a choice between two similar games. New players describe suddenly understanding its reputation rather than being soothed by it.

Why readers recommended it: honestly revenge of the savage planet. didn't look up much before buying it and just played it for what it is. brought back the old school game vibes for me without being super serious and I cant remember the last time ive laughed so hard

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Described as a change of register rather than a main game — a free exploration title commenters keep for when their usual competitive games are too much. One calls it life-changing without elaborating, which is the pattern across this entry.

What readers reported: Palia - free. Avatar frontiers of Pandora -50-80 dollars worth it it you like open world games and sci-fi. Sky children of the light- free

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: The most consistently described game in the corpus: commenters independently name the same three qualities — art, exploration and a deliberately obscure story — and compare it to a classic adventure series crossed with a punishing combat system. It is recommended for rekindling interest in game design itself.

What readers reported: Tunic! The art is amazing and the little fox is so cute.. I personally am in love with the exploration, story, and combat :)

Limit: Commenters note the story is intentionally vague, which is a barrier for some.

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: If I want emotional release: RDR2, God of War Ragnarok and The Last of Us 1&2. For mindless vibes and side quests: Horizon Forbidden West, AC, Uncharted

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: A friends-first recommendation, named repeatedly alongside the other survival-craft titles as part of a group rotation rather than a solo experience. Where commenters describe it alone, they emphasise exploration and base building over challenge.

What readers reported: Core Keeper! I love playing this game with all of my friends 🥰

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Deep Rock Galactic. Play as a group of dwarfs sent to go mine/do tasks on an alien planet while fighting off hordes of alien bugs. Each mission has a unique generated map and fully destructible terrain. Great to play with friends but the community is also very wholesome and the devs are very involved. I had dreams about this game I was so obsessed.

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Named by people stepping away from online play — commenters describe deliberately abandoning multiplayer during a bad period and choosing self-contained single-player titles, with this one recurring as the example.

What readers reported: I'm not really a gamer I just love Dishonored. I kinda liked tomb raider also

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: honestly? playing "older" games I didn't when I was younger. yeah everyone is saying bg3 and I agree but something about playing an older game with all their quirks is so fun. modern gaming burnt me out more than anything. I'm playing Fable right now

Why readers recommended it: Slime Rancher if you’re feel cute, Inscryption if you are feeling spooky 🥰

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Named specifically as a slump-breaker rather than a comfort game — the commenter's framing is that it restored interest after a period of playing nothing, which is the exact question the thread asks.

What readers reported: Expedition 33 most recently. Hades blew my mind, was so unique. Blasphemous. Metaphor ReFantazio was incredible. LOVE FF7 Remake and Rebirth, can’t wait for the 3rd part.

Why readers recommended it: Alan wake 2 was a masterpiece. Yes it went over the developers budget and is only now or recently making up for their studio losses, but does it deliver! They made a game that, in my opinion, did not let down any of the series fans. For heavens sake there’s even a musical section within the game that is fire.

Why readers recommended it: Silent Hill 2 remastered. Cried when I finished it because I was sad it was over

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Named as a pair rather than a single game, with the sequel treated as inseparable from the original — commenters recommend both together and give no reason to play only one.

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: The clearest example of the thread's low-demand category: commenters describe it as small, chill and mindless in a positive sense — something that can be switched off without cost — and name it specifically as what they played while depressed. It also functions as a reference point for recommending similar games.

What readers reported: Camper Van: Make it Home. Just released on Steam. If you played and enjoyed unpacking you will love it!

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Definitely gotta favorite this because I do need game recommendations a lot. I usually play arma reforger and God of War I like them a lot. Arma is a military sim game with a lot to do but it takes a bit to learn how to read the map without your location and all

Best for: Complete index of every game named

Why readers recommended it: Recommended for the opposite effect to the cozy picks: commenters describe it converting sadness into anger and absurdity, with the combo-rating system named as the source of satisfaction. Its own supporters note it has little replay value.

Why readers recommended it: An older-games recommendation that comes with an explicit warning about its own overhead: commenters say it is worth it only if you accept dated visuals and are not the sort to be angered by making old software run on modern hardware. Soundtrack and dialogue humour are the qualities named.

What readers reported: If you are Not prone to anger trying to get old Games to work on newer Hardware and dont care for graphics I would say gothic 1&2

Supporters are explicit that it is not for everyone and that friends are part of the recommendation.

What readers reported: My love for gaming was recently reignited with Abiotic Factor, it’s like Half-Life + SCP had a sandbox baby. By far the most fun I’ve had in a game in a long time and I don’t see myself stopping any time soon
