How Direct-from-China Ordering Works: Platforms, Shipping, Tariffs and Scam Checks
Choose the buying route by order size and risk
Taobao and AliExpress suit consumer-scale browsing but can add language, agent, shipping, and return friction, while Alibaba is more naturally aligned with supplier contact and larger orders. DHgate and informal vendor channels require stronger counterfeit, payment, and scam checks, and old advice that sub-$800 shipments generally enter duty-free is no longer current.
- A platform comparison for Taobao, AliExpress, Alibaba, DHgate, Temu, agents, and informal vendor channels
- A route-by-order-size selector
- Shipping, returns, and payment-protection checks
- Current tariff and de minimis guidance
- Counterfeit, prescription-product, and scam warnings
- A receipts-and-real-cost example

There are scammers in every country. The fat that China HIGHLY incentivizes small business/entrepreneurs which allows for great quality and legit businesses.
Seen so many people recording themselves ordering, but they never show the goods. Funny that.

Where the crowd actually orders
Nine routes to a Chinese factory came up again and again across the thread. Taobao — China’s domestic everything-app — dominated the conversation, with the “yellow app” DHgate a strong second.
Taobao
72 coded comment recordsLegit, dirt cheap, and stubbornly in Chinese — the crowd swears by it and fights it in equal measure.
- I lived in China. Taobao is legit. I’d order from there with zero worry. It’s like Temu though, you sometimes get great stuff and sometimes not so great. But it’s always cheap!♥ 2,953
- I ordered clothes from Taobao. 60 clothes for 400 dollars but shipping cost more. All the clothes are very high quality and it’s so much better than the brand I had before. It took 2-3 weeks.♥ 440
DHgate
49 coded comment records“The yellow app” — the section’s favorite for name-brand lookalikes, vetted by reviews and customer photos.
- Been ordering from DHgate for years. All my teen kids name brand clothes and shoes. (Lululemon, Nikes, Birkenstocks, etc. tags bags stitching all identical. Not once have they ever noticed.♥ 1,848
- DHGATE for my LV bags and CC bags 3 weeks to deliver 140 dollars for 3 bags that included shipping i went by reviews and pics from real consumers♥ 171
WhatsApp vendors
25 coded comment recordsNumbers passed hand to hand: negotiate in chat, pay by PayPal or Venmo, and wait.
- I’ve only bought clothing/accessories. Contacted via WhatsApp, negotiated the price, paid via PayPal, no minimum order, free shipping, shipping took maybe 2 months. Very good experience♥ 309
- I just did it during their live. I didn’t use a VPN. Contacted them through their WhatsApp number. Paid through Venmo. Waiting for the order.♥ 303
Private shoppers & agents
25 coded comment recordsThe concierge route — someone in China shops, inspects, photographs, and ships.
- I use a private shopper in China. She sends me photos before she ships. I have received AMAZING bags.♥ 8,111
- I've been buying for a chineese middle man for 4 years. I tell her what I want she finds it.. I order from her and she collects all my stuff I want and then it's shipped.♥ 181
Temu
25 coded comment recordsThe baseline everyone measures against: “great stuff and sometimes not so great, but always cheap.”
- I ordered my daughter's their vanities from Temu instead of Amazon bc shipping was $80 and Temu was free. got them in a week a nd they're fantastic!♥ 1
- I'll stick to Temu until Taobao becomes a little more English friendly because I need to stalk the reviews before I order.♥ 3
Alibaba
18 coded comment recordsFactory-direct for the big stuff — whole-house furniture, tile, even food trucks — with FaceTime factory tours to weed out resellers.
- We ordered all of our house furniture from China , same factory as Restoration Hardware. Exactly what we ordered we got , no VPN , just alibaba. Quality is exceptional, if not better. ! I will never buy from the store again and go straight to the factories. Takes a bit of searching but they can produce anything !♥ 239
- Yes , I started on Alibaba. I found a factory from a recommendation off another TikTok. They did a FaceTime tour of the factory to show me around to ensure they are a factory. There is a lot of resellers in China that will onsell factory items and add a %. So you want to go directly to the factory. I used a company called HangKai Furniture. Details - +86 18025984700 (WeChat and Whatsapp are available) or email kailey[account]♥ 54
Facebook groups
15 coded comment recordsInvite-only groups where the “hidden links” and vetted sellers get passed around.
- I have ordered from AliExpress and DHgate for years. It’s legit. There’s groups on Reddit and fb you join to figure out where the luxury items are hidden.♥ 97
- Vendors post on Facebook and alibaba they contact you via what’s app. You can request photos and video/ sample of product . U do have to pay for them to make the sample but they will remove sample fee♥ 3
AliExpress
14 coded comment recordsThe decade-old workhorse: slower, cheap, and refund-friendly.
- I've been ordering regularly from Aliexpress, for years and rarely have issues, just takes longer and may get lost in transit, but always refunds♥ 16
- I order from AliExpress all the time. Takes about 7-10 days, and free shipping. Pay about a third of Canada prices. Just carefully read the ad and price, as it can be tricky.♥ 2
Where the rep-hunting veterans have been all along.
- Go to Reddit. Thank me later♥ 80
- I’ve done it for years. Taobao is the site, fashionreps on Reddit, you use Superbuy to have it transfer since you need to have a buyer middle man.♥ 106

How the complete discussion index was counted
The source corpus contains 2,063 captured canonical comment records: 263 top-level comments and 1,800 replies.
Every retained canonical record appears exactly once in the searchable index, classified into exactly one of 15 emergent discussion themes and 67 sub-themes derived from reading the full corpus; whether a record was a top-level comment or a reply plays no part in the grouping.
Similar comments remain separate. The index is a source-record archive, not a count of unique facts, products, tips, people, recommendations, or independently verified claims.
