88 Chapped-Lip Remedies, Compared by Cause, Technique and Safety
Start with barrier repair, then investigate why it keeps returning
Occlusive repair dominates the recommendations, especially Aquaphor, Bag Balm, lanolin, and Vaseline, often paired with a hydrate-then-seal routine. If that basic approach fails, irritants, toothpaste, medication, lip habits, climate, allergy, or a medical condition may matter, while exfoliating acids and steroid balms require caution.
- A first-line barrier-repair comparison led by Aquaphor, Bag Balm, lanolin, and Vaseline
- The exfoliate, hydrate, and seal technique with limits
- A visible What if it keeps coming back? cause checklist
- Cortibalm, acid, allergy, medication, and persistent-symptom safety notes

Careful though because hyaluronic acid can pull moisture OUT of the skin if you're in a dry climate I'm pretty sure. Instead of pulling it IN.
This is actually really good advice. Hyaluronic acid can pull 1000x its own weight in water. That’s why when using it in a serum it’s basically useless unless you’re putting a moisturizer on top
And the key the hyaluronic acid is buying low molecular formulas.

“This is infact not tmi”
The confession barely finished before the thread turned it into a diagnosis. Everyone agreed it wasn't TMI — then got straight to work.
What's actually causing it
Not everyone jumped straight to a product. A smaller, more insistent group argued the balm isn't the problem — something upstream is.
Fix it from the inside
10 coded comment recordsWater, lysine, B vitamins — some insist the fix isn't topical at all.
- Serious question (not meant to be rude) - are you drinking enough water? My chapped lips are a sign for me when I haven’t been getting enough water♥ 3
- Take a lysine supplement. It helps with skin healing.♥ 3
- Just drink water♥ 3
Switch your toothpaste
8 coded comment recordsSLS in toothpaste, not your lip balm, might be the actual irritant.
- Try switching to a sulfate free toothpaste! I also spent my whole life with chronically chapped lips and nothing helped at all. My doctor couldn’t figure it out either. Come to find out the sulfate in my toothpaste was irritating my lips.♥ 3
- This happened to my husband. He realized it was his crest toothpaste. He switched to Sensodyne and it helped immediately.♥ 3
- Toothpaste with the ingredient SLS causes chronic dry lips!! I switched to one without and lips look fresh now!♥ 3↑ Fact-checked in the answer index
You might be allergic to your fix
8 coded comment recordsLanolin, carnauba wax, even Aquaphor — the ‘holy grail’ can be the trigger.
- I’m allergic to carnouba (spelling??) wax. It’s in a ton of moisturizing lip products. It makes my lips chapped and wrinkly. I use aquaphor now and the problem went away♥ 3
- This happened to me for a year! Turns out I'm allergic to aquafor - Dr. Dans cortibalm saved me but also check for cheilitis bc chapped lips can get infected♥ 3
- Try using only vasoline and nothing else for a week. You might have an allergy to something in chapstick♥ 4
You sleep with your mouth open
7 coded comment recordsMouth tape at night gets floated as the fix nobody expects to work.
- Mouth tape at night. Fixed my dry lips♥ 3
- Same 😭 apparently I sleep with my mouth open. I started wearing a lip mask to bed, solved the problem.♥ 3
- Are you mouth breathing? That dries out lips really quickly♥ 3
It's sun damage
4 coded comment recordsSPF on lips, not more balm, is what finally worked for a few commenters.
- I have started wearing spf lip balm while outside or driving and now my lips never get chapped anymore. I had no idea they were just sun damaged♥ 3
- Also if you look it up it’s says it magnifies rays causing further sun damage. So maybe great for at night but not during the day♥ 0
Stop guessing, see a doctor
3 coded comment recordsWhen cracking gets painful, several commenters say skip the DIY and get checked.
- I just went to my doctor and got a prescription for extremely cracked, dry lips. Apparently Vaseline isn’t strong enough so I suggest trying to go to your dermatologist!♥ 3
- Lip covers at night to keep you from drooling. Also see a doc and make sure you don’t have anything fungal going on (esp if the corners are affected).♥ 0
The verdict, such as it is
This section is an editorial synthesis of the captured discussion. It highlights recurring ideas without treating them as a complete catalog or independently verified facts.
Conversation context and side chatter
What the comments actually reach for
Nine names and one technique account for most of the recommendations. Aquaphor is named most often — but Bag Balm is close behind, with a cult following of its own.
Aquaphor
53 coded comment recordsThe default answer — from the big jar, never the tube marked ‘for lips.’
- Aquaphor from the big jar. The specific lip one is not as good♥ 10,494
- Aquafore is the only answer♥ 1,556
- Glycolic acid to exfoliate the dead skin, hyloranic acid for hydration, lock in with aquaphor on top.♥ 49
Bag Balm
49 coded comment recordsA barn-and-farm classic with a cult following, if you can stomach the smell.
- Bag balm is literally the only thing that has helped mine. Specifically the tin version♥ 24
- Came here to comment bag balm but they’re already here 🥰 only thing that helped me through accutane & I’ve been hooked since… I keep them EVERYWHERE♥ 52
- Bag balm saved my life♥ 6
Lanolin / nipple cream
41 coded comment recordsBaby-aisle nipple cream, borrowed by adults with cracked lips — and it works.
- Lanolin is literally game changer and so affordable!!!♥ 3,000
- Lanolips never lets me down. I even use it on dry, cracking eczema and it works like a charm in a day or 2♥ 3
- Lanolips and glossier lip gloss !!♥ 4
Vaseline / petroleum jelly
18 coded comment recordsRarely the whole plan — usually the seal on top of something else.
- Get them wet, put a layer of hyaluronic acid serum on them and wait until it’s almost dry. Top with Vaseline. The hyaluronic acid pulls the water into your lips♥ 557
- At night, pick any moisturizer(I use tallow), put it on as a base layer and then put Vaseline over it♥ 3
- hyaluronic acid followed by vaseline before bed every night !!!♥ 3
Dr. Dan's Cortibalm
16 coded comment recordsA steroid balm fans swear by — and just as many warn not to overuse.
- Dr Dans Cortibalm is the BEST. I used it while on accutane and I still use it even after being off accutane for over a year. It’s my only chapstick♥ 3↑ Fact-checked in the answer index
- Dr. Dans- Cortibalm♥ 4
- Dr. Dans lip balm. Get it on Amazon♥ 3
Revision Youthful Lip Replenisher
15 coded comment recordsThe pricier upgrade pick — $40+, and apparently worth it to loyalists.
- Try Revison youthful lip replenisher!!! It plums and hydrates + has a cooling menthol feel/taste lol. It’s more on the sticky side BUT you get used to it♥ 5
- Revision Skincare Youthfull Lip Replenisher!! It’s expensive $42 on Amazon but lasts forever and cured my chronic chapped lips.♥ 3
- Revision Skincare YouthFull Lip Replenisher! That and I second Dr. Dans Cortibalm (I usually layer the revision over this) and I promise it works♥ 3
The hyaluronic-acid sandwich
13 coded comment recordsNot a product — a technique: wet lips, HA serum, then seal.
- This happens to me all the time, especially in the winter. I use hyaluronic acid serum on my lips and topping it with petroleum jelly before bed.♥ 3
- use a hyaluronic acid serum like from la roche posay AM and PM!!! it plumps the skin and seal w aquaphor!!!♥ 3
- Hyaluronic acid and the equator from the tub layered on top. It my lips are no longer wrinkly and dry any more!♥ 3
Exfoliate first
9 coded comment recordsScrub the dead skin off before anything else gets a chance to absorb.
- I put a little glycolic acid on my lips then put aquaphor on top of it! It really works. A dermatologist recommended it to me :)♥ 3↑ Fact-checked in the answer index
- Lip scrub, 100%. Then Burt’s bees or whatever doesn’t just sit on the surface for you!♥ 3
- I suffered with this all winter and just started using a gentle exfoliator followed by a serum and la roche posay cicaplast before bed and they are so smooth now.♥ 3
Ole Henriksen Pout Preserve
8 coded comment recordsThe one ‘skincare aisle’ pick that keeps sneaking into a home-remedy thread.
- Ole henrikson lip balm did the job for me and that’s not even the reason I bought it, also is pretty♥ 3
- Ole Henriksen peptide lip treatment. It’s the only one I’ve tried that actually works and doesn’t dry your lips out further (I’ve tried them all).♥ 4
- Ole Henriksen Pout Preserve Peptide Lip Treatment is a life-saver for me!♥ 3
Dataset, coverage, and methodology
How the complete discussion index was counted
The source corpus contains 411 captured canonical comment records: 281 top-level comments and 130 replies.
Every retained canonical record appears exactly once in the searchable index, assigned to one reviewed theme and one sub-theme based on the comment's dominant subject.
The ranked remedy lists count every record that names that remedy — one record can name several — while the complete index files each record exactly once, so the two figures differ by design.
Similar comments remain separate. The index is a source-record archive, not a count of unique facts, products, tips, people, recommendations, or independently verified claims.
