Social Media Manager Tactics: What They Do, Why, and the Risks

Start here

The tactics, what they’re trying to trigger, and where they cross the line

Common tactics include self-liking and self-commenting through owned accounts, engaging around publish time, recruiting friends or coworkers, rotating burner accounts, keyword and caption tweaks, reposting, batching, AI-assisted ideation, deliberate mistakes, and engineered outrage. Each card should distinguish ordinary workflow or creative testing from deceptive engagement, approval bypasses, copyright or licensing risks, and platform claims that lack evidence.

What you will find
  • Low-risk, gray-area, and avoid lanes
  • Hooks, batching, testing, and quality-focused tactics
  • Mechanism versus evidence distinction
  • Deceptive engagement and approval risks
  • Audio licensing and copyright context
  • Measurement and platform-version caveats

I’m not a social media manager—I’m a brand manager who goes hard on the social side. One of my craziest hacks? I have my client’s kitchen cook up mini samples, then I camp out by the register and offer taste tests to real customers while they wait for their food. In exchange for a discount, I record their reactions and upload it on the spot. No influencers—just real people, real-time. I can knock out 30–40 pieces of content in just a few hours. Thirteen kinds of answer

Every one of the 393 tactic comments sits in exactly one group. Bars count comments, not ideas: thirty-nine separate people recommended a deliberate mistake, in thirty-nine different sets of words.

The accounts behind the account

The most common answer in the thread: keep other accounts, and use them on your own posts.

  • carry on entire convos in the comments w my personal account. hope this helps!!! 🫶♥ 6,156
  • After posting on IG, hide like count, post to story. Send to your other IG accounts as messages. Switch to them, like the post and save it. IG sees it as valuable when it gets saved♥ 4,042
  • Have multiple spam accounts across multiple phones to multiply immediate engagement on new posts (not saying I do but I’ve heard a thing or two 🫣)♥ 5

Working the levers

Feature-level moves — trial reels, keyword text hidden in the frame, cover photos, audio picked on a personal phone.

  • Post a video like this to get great watch time while everyone reads the comments.♥ 3,682
  • If you edit your videos out of Instagram and Tiktok, ensure you add text of what the video is about and hide the text,..Helps in SEO😊♥ 630
  • Upload a brand video to your personal TT first, let it choose the best audio (TT has great audio suggestions but only on personal accounts) and then sending the audio to your business account to use♥ 85

Wrong on purpose

Misspell it, mispronounce it, get the fact wrong, then let the corrections do the work.

  • Spell something wrong 🤣 the MOST amount of engagement every time 🤣♥ 15,925
  • Spelling incorrectly has been said, but mispronouncing something small. I once pronounced Marie Claire “Mary Claire” and people could not wait to be right 😅♥ 229
  • I use accept/except or your/you're or there/ they're / their incorrectly. The grammar natzis can't help themselves but to reply. The more I feign ignorance, the more they reply.♥ 0

Where the ideas come from

ChatGPT for research and captions, Reddit and Quora for questions, rival brands for tone.

  • using dominos and wendys fb page as inspiration for strategy♥ 4,602
  • Step 1: use chatgpt to do a deep research on your industry, for your product (potential clients, pain points, relevant topics, etc) Step 2: Use reddit to find insights & queries on relevant topics♥ 876
  • whenever i'm insecure about smth i ask chatgpt how an overconfident man would approach this situation and LET ME TELL YOU this has been the best gamechanging life hack i've ever seen♥ 415

Engineered outrage

Pick the fight deliberately, then stay in the comments while it burns.

  • Treat your brand like a reality TV character. Pick a feud. Cry once a week. Win.♥ 61
  • When ever I get a brand deal I post a lil rage bait before or after to get extra views most of the time the hate stays on the rage video but curious people check your acct and watch and engage♥ 28
  • Purposefully saying something stupid because I’m a “girl and I don’t know what I’m talking about” so it queues the trolls♥ 0

The minutes around posting

Warm up before you post and engage after — or post and run. The thread never settles it.

  • 15 min engagement before you post. 15 min after you post. You’re welcome ✨♥ 6,107
  • No any videos in your feed. And comment to form a conversation. Ask a question, make a strong statement that you know will create other replies, reply to other people’s comments. Don’t just use emojis♥ 33
  • spend 20 minutes engaging with other accounts before dropping new content 🤭♥ 12

Bank it and post it twice

Film more than you need, batch it, and send what already worked back out.

  • Posting old content that performed well on trial reels everyday, but not posting it onto the main feed. Works great!♥ 2,146
  • I post flops on purpose, then repost them 2 weeks later at peak hours with a stronger hook. 9 times out of 10 — viral. Algorithms eat recycled confidence. 😌📈♥ 1
  • I don’t have anything crazy but a good tip is to film way more content than you need because one day when you have no ideas you can create a video out of those extra clips♥ 2

Conscripting everyone you know

Besties, parents, colleagues, the work group chat, one 80-year-old grandmother.

  • asking my bestie to comment on every video i post 🫡🫠♥ 108
  • have your entire family like and comment under each post. even my 80-year old grandma is locked in♥ 0
  • Send to the my friend group and tell them if they don’t like I’ll lose the client and won’t be able to take them out to drinks later.♥ 0

Try less, on purpose

The video made in ten seconds beats the one that took a day, and everyone has stopped fighting it.

  • Your videos with the least amount of effort put into them will go viral😍♥ 1,974
  • Act like you suck at your job. Everything skyrockets. People want to see you lose but in reality you are winning. Perfection is boring.♥ 149
  • Literally 1 take is all you get if I’m behind the camera. Is it bad?? Perfect. Is it perfect? Perfect. We don’t do 2 takes here. 🫣♥ 0

No tricks, just make it good

The dissent: if you need burner accounts and fake typos, the problem is the content.

  • There are no hacks in social, make good content and it won’t flop 😭 I say maximum effort maximum reward ✨✨✨♥ 96
  • Creating engaging content. If you have to like and comment from personal accounts or spell stuff wrong for engagement, you need to 👀 at the content 🙈♥ 0
  • My motto is “If you’re laughing while making it, they’ll laugh while watching it” ❤️♥ 0

Going around the approvals

Don't ask legal. Don't ask the boss. Apologise afterwards.

  • ~*Don’t get legal approval~*♥ 651
  • Posting the terrible post that someone tells me to post so that it flops and I can push back on it next time 😂♥ 393
  • Fake the flu for ten days, get your colleagues to cover your work, spend that ten days creating a shit ton of content so when you get back in the office you don’t have to create content every day! Be sure to bring everyone cupcakes and coffee when you return! 😅♥ 0

Check which account you're on

The recurring nightmare of the job — and the people who use the mix-up on purpose.

  • Always check which account you’re posting your stories on…♥ 1,781
  • Stalking your ex’s accounts through the brand’s account 🙃♥ 558
  • GIRL! I legit ask for second phones bc of this! This is all social media managers’ fear. Also accidentally liking something shady or funny as the company♥ 5

The thread disagrees with itself

The single most-liked instruction in the thread is “15 min engagement before you post. 15 min after you post. You’re welcome ✨” — 6,107 likes. Directly beneath it, eight of the thirty comments in the same group say the exact opposite: post, close the app, and leave it alone. “post, close and ‘leave it to marinate’ as I say.” “post on tiktok then RUN.”

The room noticed. “Ok but the comment above this says to close the app immediately after posting, so which one is it??” asked one reply. Another, days later: “Someone please tell me, am I supposed to engage for 15 min after posting or close the app immediately? Which one is it??” Nobody ever answered.

It is not the only fight. Twenty-one comments insist the lazy post always wins — “Your videos with the least amount of effort put into them will go viral” — while twenty push back that there is no trick at all: “There are no hacks in social, make good content and it won’t flop.” The sharpest version of the objection came from inside the confession pile: “If you have to like and comment from personal accounts or spell stuff wrong for engagement, you need to 👀 at the content.”

Buried treasure: the answers that arrived after everyone left

These landed weeks or months after the video stopped travelling, so they carry single-digit hearts. Scored against their own arrival window, they are among the strongest comments in the thread.

What the hearts are actually measuring

Only 60 of the 2,075 comments arrived in the first 24 hours, and those 60 hold 34.7% of every like in the thread. The video kept collecting answers for months afterwards, and those answers landed in an empty room: 283 of the 393 tactic comments were posted on day four or later, and 205 of them carry zero likes.

That is why nothing on this page is ranked by hearts. A comment’s like count is scored against the other comments that arrived in the same window, which is how a note posted on day 86 with twelve likes ends up sitting beside one from day one with fifteen thousand. The section above is what that scoring surfaces.

And then there is everybody else

The other thing the thread is full of is people watching it happen. 333 of the 2,075 comments are somebody announcing they are taking notes — ✍️, 📝, “write that down, WRITE THAT DOWN” — and a further 281 contain no words at all. Brand accounts turned up to gawk at other brand accounts. One commenter summed up the whole scene: “This comment section is contradicting itself.”

The video itself is implicated. The most quietly self-aware answer in the pile points at the thing you are reading: “Post a video like this to get great watch time while everyone reads the comments.” It has 3,682 likes.

How this was counted

The unit is a comment, not an idea. All 2,075 comments and replies scraped from the video were read; 393 of them state a specific tactic or working practice and are listed in full below.

Nothing is merged. When many people give the same advice in different words, each comment is counted separately, so group sizes measure how often something was said rather than how many different ideas exist.

Ranking uses arrival-corrected resonance: a comment's likes are scored against other comments posted in the same arrival window. Only 60 comments landed in the first 24 hours, yet they hold 34.7% of all 79,432 likes, so raw hearts mostly record who got there first. Displayed like counts are the real, unadjusted ones.

Set aside and listed by reason in comprehensive-ledger.json: 1,222 reactions and note-taking comments, 281 comments containing no words, 72 questions, 55 comments that only tag another account, 38 promotions, 9 comments not in English and 5 unrelated remarks.

The note-taking tile counts the 333 comments whose text contains a note-taking marker: a form of "taking notes", "write that down", "jotting", "notepad", "notebook", or the ✍️ or 📝 emoji.

This is a record of what people claimed about their own work in a comment section. It is not a test of what works, and it is not an endorsement.
